The Wolves of the Northlands

Tall and powerful, Barbarians share many of the same physical features of their Human relations, but are physically more imposing, displaying larger muscle mass and averaging seven feet in height. Both genders often sport long hairstyles, a link to their distant past when such hair styles assisted in surviving the chilling weather of their ancestral homeland, Everfrost. The bodies of barbarians are muscular and built for war, and they excel at being fighters due to their mighty strength and impressive stamina. They are also surprisingly agile and often make formidable scouts.

Background

These humanoids were created by the sibling Gods, Mithaniel and Erollisi Marr. Settled in the cold lands of the north, their city of Halas was built within the frozen tundra of Everfrost. Their buildings are somewhat primitive by human standards, of simple architecture and making use of found and shaped materials. A warrior race, they often decorated the interior of their buildings with trophies from battle as well as skins and hides used as records of their culture's history and lore. The arrival of the barbarians on Norrath ushered in the Age of Blood. The barbarians moved outward from their northern home, initiating brutal battles with whatever races they encountered as well as other barbarian tribes, as a means to grow in strength and power. Eventually the Marr twins gifted more insightful thinking among the barbarians, and these wiser folk became the fathers and mothers of the Human race.

Barbarians do not hide their emotions, and no one ever has any problems knowing what a barbarian thinks of them. They are a proud race and will gladly back up their boasts with a show of force.

Faith

A primitive race, barbarians are shamanistic by nature, though in recent times certain tribes have developed to the extent of practicing the clerical arts. Many barbarians worship the Marr twins who created them, although fighters tend to honor the militaristic traditions of the War Lord, Rallos Zek. Barbarians also tend to have a highly developed sense of justice, inspiring many to worship the Tribunal, which can spur near fanatical devotion amongst the religious caste.

General

Barbarians, supposedly direct decendants of the gods of Valor and the Goddess of love, are a race of hardy humans whose forebears hailed from the harsh northern lands of the old Antonican continent. Their breeding and unforgiven nature of the arctic wastelands of their originhave imbued them with abilities beyond those of many of the "softer" people of the more cultural (or "weaker") human races.

Referring to themselves as "Northmen" the Barbarians have reputations - not entirely undeserved - for being quick to anger and violence. They are often sought out as expert guards and Mercenaries.

Demeaner

Barbarians tend to enjoy simple pleasure such as eating, drinking and fighting. Practical folk, they don't have much patience for philosophy or theoretical studies. Indeed, Barbarians tend to avoid anything other than hunting, fighting abd working, or perhaps talking about those activities over a skin of ale or mead. Although they are capable of withstanding even the freezing waters of their ancestral homeland, many avoid bathing.

In general, Barbarians tend more toward good than evil. Most value the fair treatment of everyone, although they tend to be unforgiving of anyone taking advantage of their fair-mindednesss. Barbarians almost invariably respect acts of courage and daring; being thought as a coward is far worse in a barbarians mind than any other fate.

Appearance

Barbarians are a large, powerfully built race, generally standing nearly 7 feet tall and weighing 215 pound or more, although exceptional specimens approuch 8 feet in height and weigh well over 300 pounds. Barbarians tend to be fair skinned often with freckles. Their hair runs the gamut from auburn to deep red or brown to blonde. Eye color varies greatly, though blue and green are most common. The occasional barbarian has black hair or brown eyes, though these features are often assumed to be a sign of intermingled southerner blood somewhere in their ancestry.

Barbarians take great pride in the scars they inevitably gain throughout their lives. Some tribes practise ritual scarification, marking themselves during ceremonies of adulthood. Face paint and tattooing are also common; red or blue markings indicate great deeds or tribal allegiance.

Barbarian clothing tends to reflect the enviroment from which their people originated, consisting of mainly of thick fur and hide that keeps them warm and provides protection against predators. This clothing is often skillfully tailored and can be decoratively lined with exotic furs; stitching is an art form among them, and a competant tailor can make clothes that actually tell stories, with decorative borders and designs as detailed as any painting or tapestry . In warmer enviroments or when encountered indoors, barbarians are easily recognizable by their kilts ( Woman may or may not wear shirts with them ).

The Shattering

Since the descruction of their northern ancestral homeland of Halas, Barbarians have spread across the Shattered lands. Their tenacity and vigor have allowed them to adapt and survive in many harsh enviroments . Rustic settlements and hunting outpost thrive, trading in hides, alcohol, and weapons. Of those barbarians finding their way to Qeynos, many fill the ranks of the city's Outland Bridage, or hire out their muscle in the working-class district called Graystone Yard. Bitter and vengeful barbarians sometimes find a place in Freeport, among the Militia or as allies of the reptilien Iksar in the Scale Yard.
