My Fellow Recruiter,

There is much advice on the guild walls concerning recruiting, and this note brings this together to form a simple guide for those manning the front desk. It must be read and signed by all that wish to have recruiting rights within the family.

As a recruiter you will be faced with many challenges - Is that name right? Is this person really a roleplayer? Is this person right for Truewatch? It is important that you retain the balance between vigilance and tolerance – but remember that we have a 30 day probation period to resolve doubt (most of the time). When recruiting, our underpinning ethos is based upon the direction provided by our leader - Lady Briarthorn has stressed the importance of quality over quantity. We want to recruit those that will stay with the family for some time, not those that stay for just one day.

The key to success is the initial interview. It has been proven time and again that a little time spent here will reduce many problems later. Whenever possible you should meet the potential recruit in person and conduct the initial interview face to face – but this may not always be possible, in which case you must arrange to meet up a few days later. As a guide, I usually spend around 30 minutes recruiting a new member.

Who Can Recruit?

Any Officer of Truewatch may recruit as well as members of the Recruiter rank, as long as the Recruitment Policy below is adhered to.

Initial Interview

So what should we be doing in the recruiting interview? There are three things that potential recruits must be told:

We are a roleplaying guild – that is we maintain character in guild chat. We do not use ‘modern’ speech in guild chat – so no ‘cu ltr m8’. Further guidance may be found here:
A Quick and Easy Guide to Roleplaying
Recruits join on 30 days probation. During this period he should complete the registration quest on the guild walls and sign the oath to honour the true way. After 30 days, if the page has shown honour and understanding of our Way, then he will be sent to sign the final tomes on the Guild Walls by an officer or leader.
Never Kill the Unicorn in Oakmyst Forrest. This is because the unicorn saved the family from destruction in the old world. There is a post on the guild walls with the complete story, but I could not find it ;(

I would suggest that you cover these three areas in chat, and then send the potential recruit to the guild walls to read the Tomes of Administration, Customs and Law. Answer any final questions, and if you have a warm fuzzy feeling, invite them into the guild. Remember to tell them to say something nice to the family, and remember to introduce them to all. Oh, and remember that it is: /guild invite <name>

What Next?

Once you have guilded a new recruit you should make a post in the relevant section of the guild wall. In this post you should include your first impressions, and any other information that might be of assistance to officers and other recruiters – like the name of any alts. During the probationary period you should also check on the new recruit and help them settle into the family – you may wish to group with them, you should certainly make them feel welcomed. See them through their 30 days and you can have the pleasure of seeing them promoted to Watcher.

Bad Names

The issue of names can often cause concern. The gods have provided the following guidance:

EQ2 Naming Policy

Remember that this is the gods' policy not ours and that, as officers, we must enforce it. If you find somebody with an illegal name attempting to join the guild, you should advise them to submit a /petition to the gods requesting that they change their name. You can tell them that this is easy:

Type /petition
Press the button at the bottom labelled ‘if the article did not…… etc etc’ (you may need to search for ‘name’ if this button does not appear).
In step 1 chose 'report a bad name'
In step 2 chose the most appropriate option
In the free text box they should state that their name may be against soe naming policy and request a new name. It is best to suggest a new name yourself.

Front Desk

We aim to have just 1 or 2 recruiters on the front desk at all times – so, when you awaken, please check and, if there is 1 or less, put yourself on duty. Likewise, when you sleep, use chat to let the others know that somebody needs to replace you.

Finally, you should remember that recruiting is supposed to be fun. If it is not, or if you have any concerns or questions, please talk them over with a Leader or one of the Officers.
