Roleplayers FAQ
From WikiWatch
This is a living document. I will start it off with questions and answers to my own questions. I hope you will participate and add your own questions and comments
Again this is a FAQ, it is to help you better understand how to roleplay and how to make it fun and easy to follow along.
- How do I Talk in my characters voice?
Normal conversation should just be typed out like you would any other question. Avoid telling us what your character would say instead just say his question or statement.
- Here is the wrong way
- Strife "My character tells you that you're pretty"
- Now here is the right way
- Strife "Hey, you're pretty!"
- How do I make an out of character statement, like I need to go away from the keyboard?
Out of character comments should be enclosed in double (( )) some people like using the tag: ooc: but it is hard to spot so we prefer you use (( ))
- ooc: I'm going afk for a while
- (( I'm going afk for a while ))
- There are alot of people in the room talking how do I let someone know I'm talking only to them?
The Way you specify that your talking to someone is to start your sentence with their name followed by a > sign then your comment.
- Strife "Suzan>> Hey want a drink?"
- I want to do something, how do I show actions without words?
Before and after your action you should put a * sign, this is the easiest way to denote action.
- Strife: * walks over to the bar and gets Suzan a drink *
- I want to whisper to someone how do I do that?
For a secretive action you should state your action in the main window of what it might look like, for something simple or obvious you can just state the action. Then follow up to those who heard with a tell to their character.
- Strife: * whispers to Suzan *
- <private tell> Can I see that note you got from freeport?
- Suzan: *pulls something from her waist pouch flashing it to Strife*
- <private tell> *shows a note that reads: Meet the Overlord tomorrow at midnight*
- Should I mention out of character what I'm thinking or why my character did something?
Never explain your roleplaying or give away too much information out of character just let whatever happens, happen spontaneously.
- A lot of people are saying mean stuff to me, a lot of people hate my character.
Never take RP to seriously, a comment made about your character is not about you in the real world. This applies for all actions that occur in game. Unless you're seeing (( )) around statements sent to you, it is about your character and should not be taken personally. Not every character will get along with every other character, that does not mean the player dislikes you.
- I don't like this character in game and want to delete it, so I was thinking wouldn't it be cool if my character was assassinated and permanantly killed.
No actually that wouldn't be cool. Most players take their game seriously this would only cause turmoil and grief. Please don't kill off a character. Here are some suggestions of fun Roleplaying ways to stop playing a character.
- You joined a pilgramage or church, so your having a huge garage sale where everything must go, invite people to come by and take what they'll use and say goodbye.
- You've decided that your moving away
- An old wise man told you to meditate at the top of a mountain, as a last bit of civilization you'll share your wise words to anyone who asks. RP: saying tons of strange unrelated phrases
- You're going in for a Race Change procedure for the local witch doctor, who knows what you'll look like or even if you'll remember your old name, so your saying goodbye
- You've spoken to a career guidance counsellor and are going away to learn to be <insert new class here>
- You've been called home urgently and don't know if you'll return ((Also handy if you're going to another World/Game))
See? Have fun with it but leave the bad stuff for the real world.
- I have this great plot idea, where this bad guy kidnaps my character and everyone has to come save me.
Be careful not to set yourself up for disappointment if nobody wants to play in your plot. What is a much better idea is to make the bad guy (even if you don't level him), bring this person into the guild chat or the RP channel and threaten to do bad things, this will get players involved and they know now who the enemy is. You can then roleplay your character showing how evil he is... Leave hints eluding to your character was seen stealing your other character's keys, giving other roleplayers ways to foil your evil plans. Players want to save the day by doing the right thing, they don't alway want to be stuck in a wild goose chase, while you play the victim.
Stay in all the guidelines for RPing while trying to be evil. It is hard to play evil well, if you want enlist someone else to play the bad guy. The more involved makes for more fun and people like having roles to play.
- I'm sitting in the tavern drinking but nobody is talking to me. What am I doing wrong?
Nothing actually, if stuff is going on and you're not involved, try to get involved. Some people like to just be there and witness what's going on, if that's not you then you need to do something besides sit there.
- Try asking someone questions.
- Start a game of darts, dice, drinking, cards, guessing games, etc...
- Take up a task or job in the Tavern: waiting on tables, picking up, cleaning, bartending, cooking, rearranging
- Take a poll, interview someone
- Start pulling interesting items from your adventures out of your bags and putting them on the table
You are the only one that knows your character you should decide what your character would do.
Well that's a good start please help me make this document, huge and full of good information.
Thanks
